The Burroughs Wellcome Fund Inter-school Training Program in Metabolic Diseases,
founded by Dr. Simin Liu (Epidemiology) and Dr. Thomas Drake (Pathology and Laboratory Medicine), provides training in laboratory and population sciences to integrate the entire continuum from "sick" molecules to "sick" populations. Obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic diseases are fast becoming the number one epidemic of our time. The complexities of metabolic diseases require an equally multidisciplinary attack that goes beyond simply translating basic science discoveries into clinical practice.
With a team of outstanding researchers and educators at the cuttingedge of their research, the program harnesses major advances in biomedical and population sciences to focus on integration. By providing foundational training and research experience from both ends of the spectrum, trainees are prepared for integrating population-based quantitative sciences with laboratorybased biological sciences to effectively lead the cross-disciplinary studies of the future.

The BWF-IT-MD Training Program is open to all UCLA graduate students
(PhD, MD) who seek to apply advanced genomic, molecular, and
quantitative methods to the study of disease distribution in human
populations. Acceptance into this program will provide trainees in
this area of research with the foundational quantitative and
laboratory knowledge to enable important interdisciplinary research in
metabolic diseases. This program provides two years of support for
UCLA fees and tuition, in addition to stipend support at a higher rate
than those set by NIH or NSF.
Training Program Co-Directors: Simin Liu and Tom Drake
Training Program Administrator: Jennifer Yu
Funding Source: Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Funding Level for graduate students: stipend plus support towards UCLA fees and tuition (in-state)
Funding Period for graduate students: two years, renewable up to three years
Applicant Requirements:
